Service Project -- Wee Care

In cooperation with the national SAGA Wee Care Project, we construct, smock, and embellish simple gowns, bonnets, blankets and other items such as knit hats for donation to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit located in the Children's Hospital, which is a part of the Greenville Hospital System. These items and special dresses or gowns are for babies whose life unfortunately ended prematurely. Nancy Breedon and Melissa McWhite head-up this outreach.

This Wee Care Project idea was begun in 1986 by the Rose Trellis Smocking Guild in Portland Oregon, and has spread to many local SAGA chapters across the United States, Canada and Australia. Our chapter encourages members to make gowns and other items at their convenience. These are then collected and presented to the hospital system. We also have a Wee Care Workday occasionally to work cooperatively in making items. Our present goal is for every member to contribute at least two pieces for presentation to the neonatal unit each year. We more than met our goal in our first year of existence.

We have had several people who are not members of our group contribute to this effort. If you are interested in doing so, please contact us for further information.
